For better or worse: Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Acquired Communication Disability - a practical seminar on our new generative AI companion

Abstract
Emma Power will outline the definition of AI and Gen AI, relevant health and speech pathology literature and then showcase some practical examples of how AI can be applied to language, speech and cognitive-communication disability. Diverse tools will be explored for text, image and video generation as well as AI coaching for discourse and life story work and other administrative applications.
The seminar will showcase use of AI in clinical examples to support assessment/intervention preparation and direct opportunities for use with clients. Important policy considerations and cautions will be addressed. The talk will be of interest to researchers, clinicians, lecturers and students.
Bio
Emma is a speech pathologist and academic at the University of Technology Sydney who has worked in the area of neurogenic communication impairments following acquired brain injury for over 26 years. She is internationally recognised for her specific expertise is in digital health, communication partner training, communication accessibility and inclusion with a focus on implementation science and stakeholder co-design. She has provided keynote talks in Australia, and internationally on Tech-mediated communication and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in neurogenic communication disability.
Emma has over 145 peer-reviewed publications, $22.5+ million in grant funding and supervised 70 research students. She was awarded Fellowship of Speech Pathology Australia in 2023.
Emma is known for her engaging and practical seminars designed to assist clinicians with critical thinking and implementation of knowledge into practice.
