First Aid and CPR Certificates
The School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences Program Rules requires that from the start of the program a student must hold (and keep current) a First Aid and CPR certificate.
The required certificates are apply first aid certificates (or equivalent) issued by members of the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC). These certificates are awarded after attendance of a program with an end point examination. Membership of the Council provides guaranteed standards and uniformity of teaching. The main areas that should be covered are:
- Apply the principles of first aid
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
- Asthma & Anaphylaxis management
- Treatment of infection, shock, fractures, bleeding and burns
- Emergencies due to lack of oxygen, excess heat or cold, heart attack, stroke, asthma, diabetes and epilepsy
- Management of common medical emergencies
- Treatment of poisoning including venomous bites and stings

- St John Ambulance (Australia)
- Queensland Ambulance Service
- Surf Life Saving Australia
- UQ Sport/PulseStart
- QLD First Aid
- Australia Wide First Aid
Renewing First Aid/CPR
A First Aid Certificate is valid for three years, and a CPR Certificate for one year. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure they remain compliant for the duration of their program of study.
If renewing your CPR as part of your First Aid, please ensure that it includes both HLTAID003 Provide First Aid and HLTAID001 Provide CPR.
Registered Training Organisation (RTO)
Students with other certificates will only be accepted if they are issued by organisations holding a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) certificate. In such cases it is the responsibility of the student to provide evidence that the organisation is an RTO certificate holder.
Overseas First Aid Certificates
First aid certificates obtained overseas from internationally recognised organisations, such as the Red Cross/Red Crescent or St John Ambulance, are acceptable provided they cover the topics above, including CPR for adults and infants. It is the responsibility of the student to provide evidence on the content covered in the course.
