Researchers from The University of Queensland are trying to understand why some families choose not to use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems with their child or use them for only a short time.

The AAC system includes:

  • Sign language
  • Symbol books or boards
  • Speech generating devices
  • Picture Exchange Communication Systems (PECS)
  • iPad apps for communication. 

You will be asked to:

  • Complete a 15-20 minute questionnaire about your child and family
  • Complete a 30-60 minute interview with a researcher about your experience with AAC and your speech pathologist. The interview will be conducted at a time and place convenient to you or can be done via Skype/phone.

This research is expected to help speech pathologists understand the perspectives of families so that they can more effectively support the communication development of children with disabilities.
